Big Day out 2007

Me and Mel BDO 2007

My Chemical Romance

Evermore

Another year another Big Day out. It did not dissapoint. We got to the gig about 2 pm, so we missed out on a few acts ( smaller bands). We arrived at the Claremont Showground to the sounds of Evermore. A great New Zealand band which has been taking over the Australiasin music scene. I was incredibly skeptical of the band as television performance left me doubtful in the bands live ability. This was all put to rest as the songs Light Surrounding You, Running, It's too Late and Only For One Day rang throughout the grounds. The set was huge the drummer dressed in a red suit, genious on the kit his constant energy fueled the set. We didn't stick around for the full set as we went to find the Sleepy Jacksons. Whom we ended up walkign past as some drunken looser pointed us in the wrong direction. So we ended up missing the set, so we gave up and went to catch scribe , who mind you was so good. Next on the list was My Chemical Romance.
MCR were on the top of my list for bands to see. I am a fan of there music with Helena making it onto my top 20 greatest songs ever. ( due to film clip). We weren't able to get into the mosh, but we had a great spot. They opened with I'm not Okay which I loved. The highlights of the set were Welcome to the black Parade, Cancer and Helena. MCR were probably my favourite band of the day. They were the first band to get the crowd really going. I am glad Gerard dyed his hair black, I don't think the blonde was really working for him.
Next we were on a breather and went to the drinking area to chill out to eskimoe joe and John Butler. They both sounded really good , but eskimoe joe I feel have become really comercial, but hey you have to, to sell records.
During JBT I was supose to go see Kasabian ( previous blog) I missed out on the beginning half. Myself and friends sprinted across the grounds after skulling our beers ( incredibly tipsy at that time ) We caught a few of there songs and as usual they were awesome. I just can not fault this band . They are by far one of my favourites. They play great indie music which you can dance to. We were definatley dancing.
Unfortunately Kasabian played up to 6, which wa swhen the killers started , so after leaving during the Kasabian set we raced to get into the mosh for the killers. But low and behold they were not letting anyone in. This was not good as we were squashed in the crowd, who kept pushing forward trying to break the barriers. It was not fun and the killers started and we couldn't see them. So eventually we left the crowd and moved to the sides. The killers were smazing. Brandon Flower looked great as usual. The vaourite songs of the set were Mr Brightside and All the things I've done. I still don't really like there new stuff I find there isn't the perzaz of the old stuff. The songs are a little boring.
The rest of the day was a bit of a run around. As I did not have anyone els eon my list to see. So we just sat and ate and rested. Jet were really good, with their radio friendly set list. We caught the last of Muse, the stage setup was great and there sounds was quite good, but I really don't know any of there stuff. Tool were the last band we saw and I didn't know any of there stuff. There performance was good , but they just played such long intros to their songs that most of the time I was bored.
Overall the Big Day Out 2007 was a fun festival. It would ave to be one of the best music gigs I have been to for a while. I recommend anyone to go out and see these bands if you have the chance.

The Ataris are Back

Yes you heard it . The Ataris are releasing there new Album " Welcome the Night" on the 20th of Feb. Preorders are available at http://theataris.sanctuaryrecords.com/ . I am really ecited as I have heard an unmastered version of the new stuff and all I can say is don't expect all of the young school punk music. What I have heard sounds mellowed down and Chris's voice is so different, there is more tone and definition with his notes. His voice is definately on show. I hope this album does good. It has been a whole 4 years in the making.

Screaming for Attention

www.screamsfordylan.com, www.myspace.com/screamsfordylan

Screams for Dylan is a band which I haven't personally seen even if they do gigs in my area. I regret this a lot and I know I need to get my arse into gear and go see them. The boys are from Western Australia and play some great alternative music. They only have few demos out at the moment, but are in the process of recording new music. They recently played at the Rollercoaster festival in Mandurah and the reviews from there set were that they rocked.

Their song Finally realizing your mistake is a hit waiting to happen . The change in pace from 1st verse to pre chorus is great . The vocals sound a lot like Adam Duritz from the counting crows. With a bit more experience and new recordings this band is going to be big. The West Australian music scene is so vibrant at the moment , their is an abundance of talented bands coming through including Scream for Dylan.

Merch will soon be available at their site. You can only currently buy from gigs.
Recording available later.

Big Gigs

This weekend I will be going to the Big Day Out, which I am really excited about. I get to see some hot bands such as The Killers, Muse, My Chemical Romance and one in particular KASABIAN. This band knows how to work the crowd and play some great music. I was lucky enough to see them in 2005 at the Summer Sonic festival and ever since then I have been a huge fan. They released their second album last year titled Empire. In contrast to the previous self titled album they sound a lot more mature and lyrically ripe. The song Shoot the Runner has been getting a lot of airplay as did the song Club foot, which you may have heard on the trailer for Goal, CSI and many other shows. In other words these guys are getting heard! So in the spirit of brit rock I dare you to go listen to this band you won't be let down

p.s I know they aren't signed to an indie label. But I still classify them as Indie Electronica Rock

The Perfcet Victim

www.theperfectvictimrock.com or www.myspace.com/theperfectvictim

The Perfect Victim are a punk rock outfit from California. They seem to be the new breed of music which is coming out at the moment. Not that I am complaining. These guys are a good looking bunch and they play some great music. They are getting a lot of attention around the world, due to their great marketing of the band. The Perfect Victim have featured on the big West coast radio station KROQ as I was sitting there for a while waitign for thei song to come one. ( thank god for interent radio)

Anyway onto their music. It is a heavier form of punk rock and has some great riffs. Jeff Dagastino is greta on lead vocals he has a great voice which is quite distinctive. The band play some hard music and must get plenty of credit. The songs which I have heard so far are Emergency , Let it Go and Looser which all have a fun punk melody and tune which is greats to listen to at a loud volume.

I would recomend these guys to people who like 30 seconds to mars and other alt/rock./punk/emo bands on the scene at the moment. I say go have a listen to this band and judge for yourself .

till next time

Tasting the Chaos

Last night I attended the Australian (Perth) leg of Taste of Chaos . The line up read like this Parkway Drive , Senses Fail , Underoath , Anti Flag , Thursday , Saoisin and Taking Back Sunday . Okay depending on your music tastes you would have loved to have been there or else you would have been bored to tears. I was somewhere in between .

To begin with the location was an issue. Half of the stadium was not even full . The seating plans were thrown out as obviously ticket sales were poor. Compared to last years event , which was over sold . The Burswood Dome , is not a good place to hold such a small stage as the sound quality in the building is lacking in acoustics . This is my personal opinion , but anyone would be able to pick up on it as soon as you enter. So enough of the venue .

We arrived half way through Parkway Drive .Who are a up and coming Australian Screamo band. Let's just say they were not something I would go out of my way to see. Every word which left the bands mouth was screamed loud enough to shatter our eardrums. The lack of momentum in the music. It really left for a boring 10 minutes of which we were forced to listen music we have no intention of ever buying .

Next up was Senses Fails . Thank god for them . They were a band that I had heard of in the past . Their hit Buried a Lie was the highlight . This maybe because it was one of the only songs I knew . With that aside . This band can put on an awesome punk rock show . Minus their moments of screamo . As you can tell I a not a fan of the style . Overall I think this band has incredibly solid performance and have a great sense of humor.

One word Underoath. !! Enough said. They were one of the worst bands I have seen . I have never been more bored in my life . They were the epitome of metal hard rock crossed with screamo. Don't ge time wrong I know fans of the band would have been impressed , but I for one was not . From here I learnt my lesson of never going to a concert with a blind eye to bands on the line up.

Anti-flag followed with a great show. I had read an article about this band in the paper a few weeks ago. This was of course about their political views against George Bush . This was their main theme through out their performance. They constantly asked the audience to look after one another whether any race religion , sexual orientation . This was something which is not really known in the punk rock genre. But these guys know how to work a crowd and this was the main factor as to why I enjoyed there music .

Thursday were next up and I had high hopes for this band . I had heard such great things and also listened to a few of their songs. They did not disappoint , they were so energetic and their songs were so similar sounding to the record. A bonus for the band was their announcement of allowing people to download their songs , if the record was to expensive to buy. The highlight of their time on stage was their performance of the hit song 4,3,2,1 counting . I love it . This band were the instigators for the momentum change of the night . I was suddenly excited to see the other bands still to come.

Suprisingly one of the most anticipated bands Saosin were performing on the side stage. I don't know why this was , but all I can say is I am a FAN . This band rocked they punk rocked their way through the set . The lead singer was amazing working the crowd and constantly thanking the people of Perth for their support. It came across as though they did not know they were so popular down under . But after the show I am sure they had gained an even larger following. The highlight of this was Sleeper a new song from their new self titled album . All I can say is if you get a chance to see this band do it . They are going to be huge next year HUGE .

Now the finale Taking Back Sunday . The band everyone came to the show to see . I love this band even more then when I went in to the gig . They were working the stage better then any of the others. The crowd was going insane . They kind of reminded me of My Chemical Romance , which was a little weird. But who cares when you are in the presence of this band . I left the gig singing Make Damn Sure and they did just that . They made damn sure that everyone left as happy customers. So like Saosin go see this band if you can . You will not be disappointed . Also go out and buy their record " Louder Now "

Overall the tour was good. They should have got rid of some of the earlier bands. Or else start from the headline acts to the others. I know that is harsh , but I am being honest. The ticket to the gig was a present , which I am thank ful for . But if I did pay for it I would be a little annoyed , only because I did not do my research before going .

The Petalstones are so "Hot" right now

www.thepetalstones.com and www.myspace.com/thepetalstones and www.purevolume.com/ozono

Don't worry it isn't Paris Hilton, but it is The Petalstones ( previously known as Ozono. They are a hot band coming out of California. With Malin Akerman ( Luna on the TV show The Comeback. Her band did a guest appearence ep 7) on vocals and a powerhouse band Francesco, Roberto and Mario backing her presence. The band is amazing . They have a similar feel to evanecense , but create their own sound , which is unique amongst the long list of music flooding our airwaves at the moment.

The track " Take it or leave it " ( purevolume under Ozono) is an abstract song. The introduction tricks you into thinking that you have put your closet Irish traditional CD in the player . But after 10 seconds the distorted guitars over power the classical instrument and we are meet with Malins' angelic but rock goddess voice. The song Poison is a great rock track to get angry at . I swear if you are in a bad mood , put this song in you stereo and turn it up . Or you know in the car and turn it up, you will feel so much beter.

The band have recently released their EP under the title of Stung . It is available at record stores in Hollywood, on there website and also CD Baby ( international ) . For all of you who are into i-tunes go their and download the record.

This band has the charisma, music and looks which will definately get them noticed. So go give them a try , hopefully you will love them as much as I do .

Take Care
Lavina
